Description

  • Base-in Lifesaver vision therapy cards are used to on patients who need to increase their ability to diverge without effort. Developed by Dr Hendrickson, O.D. These Lifesaver Cards are designed for exophores, minus projectors and cases not accepting plus spheres for near and needing base-out vision therapy. These simple cards have been successfully used by many optometrists for over 35 years. Comes with instructions which allow the patients to develop plus acceptance, peripheral awareness and SILO, as well as to integrate balance and total body movement together with speech, audition and rhythm or timing. White Paper or Clear acetate, 6 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. Includes instructions for patient use. Acetate comes with cloudy protective film to be removed by user.
TopicDiscription
CatagoryVision Therapy
PurposeTo increase the patient’s ability to diverge (i.e. reduce convergence stress) without effort (base‑in divergence training).
The product is marketed as a “base‑in Lifesaver vision therapy card” for divergence.
Target UsersUsed in vision therapy / binocular training.
Can be given for home therapy use under supervision.
Optotypes / SymbolsThe card is opaque / white and typically has “lifesaver” style openings / cut‑outs (circular holes) through which a background stimulus (e.g. a letter chart) is viewed.
The card itself does not carry standard optotypes (letters) — it acts as an overlay.
Scaling / SpacingFixed design (static openings).
The card’s openings are at fixed sizes and positions; the divergence is induced by how the patient aligns / uses the card relative to the background.
Physical Size & DimensionsOEPF lists similar transparent version at 6 ½” × 4 ½” acetate for the transparent version; white version likely uses same dimensions.
Because manufacturers often reuse the same physical form for white / opaque and clear versions, the white card is probably ~6 ½” × 4 ½” (same as transparent). But this is not confirmed in the white variant spec.
Mounting / DisplayFree overlay / handheld / placed in front of patient / stimulus
Not mounted to walls
The card is used as an overlay on a background chart (or target) rather than being a standalone mounted chart.
FeaturesOpaque / white material gives high contrast against background
Circular hole / “lifesaver” cutouts allow selective viewing of background stimulus
The design encourages divergence / peripheral fusion while forcing the eye to relax convergence
Included AccessoriesThe product listing does not explicitly list accessories (cases, frames) for the white card version.
It’s likely the card comes with usage instructions or guide.
Durability / Material QualitiesMaterial: opaque (white) plastic / card (not clear)
Because it is plastic / card material (not paper), it should resist bending, moisture and wear better than paper overlays.
The card must maintain rigid shape and clean edges for the openings to remain precise.
Usability / Marker of QualitySimple to use in overlay fashion: the patient looks through openings to background stimuli to practice divergence.
The presence of both white (opaque) and clear versions gives flexibility (therapist may choose based on contrast / visual comfort).
The fact that the card is included in standard vision therapy kits implies it is clinically accepted.
Limitations: absence of published precise dimensions or tolerances for the white variant therapy precision depends on consistency of placement & alignment.
